There are two ways of making money by knowing how to write creative advertising ads. One is by writing your own advertising campaigns for your own business, or by educating others how to master the writing of creative advertising.
There are still a few places around where men who know how to write effective advertising make money by teaching others how to write it. What is more, if half the assertions made by the men who teach advertisement writing, or “ad building”, as the trade phraseology has it, are not true, there are enough assertions left to convince the skeptic that just at the present time it is fairly easy for a man who has an ordinary knowledge of spelling and English to learn how to write advertisements for which he can earn income at a high rate of $25 or $35 an hour or a good deal more.
A man who teaches it was once asked if anybody could succeed at this work, and make money with it. His answer was a resounding NO. He explained that success in the business of building creative advertising is very difficult to be obtained by a man who doesn’t know how to write an ordinary English sentence any more than that same man can be successful as a teacher of composition. As a matter of fact only about 50 per cent of the people who studied with him became successful in advertising, but the other half that fall do so because they were lacking in preliminary equipment. He couldn’t teach them spelling and English; life’s too short.
Why is it a good idea for anyone to learn how to write advertisements? I’ll tell you. He can make money with it.
These are the days of close competition in any kind of business. The business man who doesn’t keep up with the times soon falls out of the race altogether. The business man who lets his competitors do all the effective advertising while he contents himself with his own old “signboard” is not going to be able to earn income with his business, and dies a commercial death in a very short time.
The man who advertises thoughtfully always wins out. That is where the “ad building” business comes in. “There are comparatively few people who know how to advertise wisely. The writing of creative advertising as you see it today is a comparatively modern business and the men who can write good advertising campaigns are in big demand, and normally know how to take advantage of it and make money.
